  • Study: Protecting the world’s inland waterways requires more participation

Scott E. Rupp Waste Management & Environmental

Inland waterways are getting trashed. But there's good news in the days of darkening water, according to a new report that claims at least 15 percent of the world's inland surface water areas are covered by protected areas. The global target for such protected spaces is 17 percent as set out in Aichi Target 11 of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). There's a big caveat, though. These protected spaces are not distributed evenly across the globe, a study from the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) says.

  • How the IoT powers predictive maintenance in manufacturing

    Joseph Zulick Manufacturing

For far too often maintenance has been treated as expendable. Now, however, the internet of things (IoT) has brought along technology in a useful package to help maintain factories. New sensor technology can measure pressure, distance, temperature, and much more in a smaller package and from greater distances. No longer are you required to modify a machine or tool. You can now use external laser technology to measure quality and keep track of machine maintenance. If you want to know if the machine is deviating outside of its temperature range, you’ll know. If you need to track power usage, you can even see the readout from a beach in Florida.

  • NFC applications for wine and spirits brands

    Marsha Frydrychowski Food & Beverage

By 2024, the global near-field communication (NFC) market will nearly triple as adoption of the technology grows. The latest generation of iPhones can read NFC tags without the use of a third-party app. All of this means the average smartphone-carrying consumer will not only be familiar with NFC but will be able to tap their device to an NFC label on a bottle and access any verification or promotional material programmed into the tag. This article will examine two of the strongest business cases for wine and spirits brands to adopt NFC smart labeling technology: Authentication and social engagement.

  • Study: How to drive more sales on Instagram

    Emma Fitzpatrick Marketing

Eighty-three percent of people are looking to discover new products or services on Instagram. But that's just the start of the buying process. A nearly equal number of people (80 percent) use Instagram to research products and decide if they're going to buy them. The only question: Are you delivering the right content to help them make those decisions? Doing so could be the difference between increasing sales and exposure or just "getting the word out" about your business. • Enterprise service management delivers value to educational entities

    Nancy Van Elsacker Louisnord Education

The trend of educational entities adopting IT service management solutions has been on a steady rise. Educational organizations want to align operations with overall institutional strategies and goals. The IT organizations that service these educational entities play a major role in supporting educational functions by offering IT services to support the business and the mission of the institution. These organizations that are taking these technology steps find that there are fewer break-and-fix issues, but more instances where they can be builders of things and integrators of things.

  • What to expect from Airbnb on its 11th birthday

Linchi Kwok Travel, Hospitality & Event Management

This month marks the 11th birthday for Airbnb. Founded in 2008, Airbnb is the first and now dominant player in the P2P (peer-to-peer) short-term residential rental business. Last year at Airbnb’s 10th birthday, the company’s CEO Brian Chesky delivered a keynote speech — Airbnb for everyone. Around the same period, the company rolled out two new brands to its current product line: Airbnb Plus and Beyond by Airbnb. There is no doubt that Airbnb has become more than just a room-sharing enterprise, but what other markets is Airbnb after? What can we expect at Airbnb’s 11th birthday? Here are a few possibilities.

  • Auto industry expected to experience significant decrease in demand —…

Terri Williams Transportation Technology & Automotive

A recent report by Bain & Company reveals that, by 2025, U.S. vehicle demand will drop to 11.5 million — and perhaps even lower if the rate of immigrants entering the country declines. Demand was at 16 million in 2009, and 13.5 million in 2018. What's causing the decline in demand, and how can U.S. auto manufacturers weather this disruption? According to Rodney P. Parker, Associate Professor of Operations Management in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, there's a consistent opinion that auto sales in the U.S. will shrink. There's not one specific reason for the slowdown in U.S. car sales. Rather, there's a perfect storm brewing.
