Seth Sandronsky Business Management, Services & Risk ManagementAttempts to contain COVID-19 led the U.S. economy to shed 20.5 million nonfarm jobs in April versus March's employment loss of 701,000. Quantifying undetected cases of COVID-19: The pandemic serum sampling study
Dorothy L. Tengler Medical & Allied HealthcareA new study at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, has been initiated to determine how many adults in the U.S. without a confirmed history of COVID-19 infection have antibodies to the virus. This is a serosurvey, and researchers will collect and analyze blood samples from an estimated 15,000 participants (18 years of age and older) who have not had a confirmed history of COVID-19 or current symptoms in an endeavor to provide critical data for epidemiological models.

When someone is dying, what can we do?
Lisa Cole Medical & Allied HealthcareIn the throes of the uptick of the COVID-19 pandemic, my son sent me a text from a colleague of his lamenting that while thousands are and will be dying, the public is only hearing from scientists, politicians and economists. He implored experts grounded in the humanities speak directly about death before it arrives. My kid said, "Mom, do it." And proceeded to ask me a question that ripped my heart right open. "What if I had been healthy last week and today I am dying. I'm still coherent; what would you say to me? It's happening to people everywhere."

Lost hospital revenue comes into view as elective surgeries resume
Scott E. Rupp Medical & Allied HealthcareThe American Hospital Association has released a new report that suggests cratered healthcare finances as a result of COVID-19 have been disproportionally devastating for hospitals and health systems. The report says losses to these organizations will surpass $200 billion during the first four months of the outbreak from March through June 2020. The losses are not directly related to coronavirus itself but are due to the massive ancillary response to curbing the spread of the virus.

Being kind in the time of COVID-19
Lisa Cole Mental HealthcareAt the time of this writing, I'm stuck between states, self-isolating and social distancing at a friend’s home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Being in the "vulnerable" category, it's not feasible for me to do what I naturally would — love and serve in whatever way I could. One could go south really quick these days if we let ourselves. Most of us have never experienced a pandemic that’s killing so many, including our healthcare providers who are struggling to keep us alive.

Linchi Kwok Travel, Hospitality & Event ManagementAre you ready to travel once stay-at-home orders are lifted in your region? Pandemic origin controversy aside, Wuhan still harbors zoonotic viruses
Dave G. Houser Medical & Allied HealthcareWith global cases of COVID-19 pushing past 3 million — and with approximately a quarter-million deaths — the precise origin of this stealthy virus remains up for debate. While it is certain to have emerged from the central China city of Wuhan, most but not all experts agree that the virus spread from one of the city's "wet markets." These sprawling outdoor markets are similar to farmers' markets in the West except that, in addition to produce, the typical Chinese wet market includes the live slaughter of animals and the sale of wildlife.

Preventing back injuries in children who participate in flexibility-related…
Sheilamary Koch Sports & FitnessInstagram is full of kids and teens showing off their super flexibility — and my daughters seem to follow them all. One thing I’ve pointed out to them is we don’t see posts when they’re injured nor are we privy to how they’re faring 15 or 20 years from now. Fortunately, by taking the precautions that follow, conscientious parents and coaches can help reduce needless injury for young athletes and performers who strive to accomplish phenomenal feats of flexibility.
