  • How to doom your business in 7 easy steps

Anne Rose Business Management, Services & Risk Management

Most businesses begin with a dream — a dream of offering a unique product or service to a hungry market. But you can’t stop with the dream, or it stays an unfulfilled dream. The dream has to be implemented with careful planning: who is the market, how to reach it, how to produce the product or service efficiently, how to price it correctly, and how to promote it. Dreaming is easy; planning is not. In this article, we'll talk about failure — because it’s easier to fail than to succeed. Here are seven easy ways to ensure that your business proposition will fail.

  • Alternative meat products grow rapidly as more big names enter the sector

    Bambi Majumdar Food & Beverage

A Barclays report on alternative meat predicts that the nascent industry will reach $140 billion over the next decade. The growing demand for animal-free food products will help it capture approximately 10% of the $1.4 trillion global meat industry. As consumers become more health- and environment-conscious, and demand more cruelty-free foods, the plant-based protein market continues to grow. Advocates of the new industry also add low sodium content to the growing list of advantages over traditional meats.

  • Healthy eating at work: It may save your life

    Victoria Fann Food & Beverage

Poor eating habits and work seem to go hand in hand. Just ask my sister. She’s worked in the corporate headquarters for a large retailer for the past 10 years. I asked her how easy it was to eat healthy there. She said that it depended on what level of healthy I meant, and broke it down into three levels.

  • Producers of CBD-infused food should brace for new inspection routines

    Bambi Majumdar Food & Beverage

Oklahoma recently became one of the first states to put additional inspectors in place for CBD and THC food products sold in the state. Health inspectors will randomly visit medical marijuana businesses to ensure they comply with the law. Though it is one of the hottest and fastest-growing industries, concepts in safety for food and drink products infused with CBD or THC are still vague. Oklahoma agencies aim to add another layer of protection for these products.

  • Is Amazon’s departure from restaurant delivery permanent?

    Linchi Kwok Food & Beverage

Amazon Restaurants, a food delivery app like UberEats, will officially close on June 24. Amazon entered the restaurant delivery business in Seattle in 2015, but it has been struggling to compete with UberEats, Grubhub, Postmates, and DoorDash — the four dominant players in the market that control 93% of market share. While it may seem like a smart decision for Amazon to end its restaurant delivery service at this point, I do not believe the company wants to give up this business just yet. When the timing is "right" again, Amazon will very likely get back to the restaurant delivery service, possibly through integration with its fresh-food grocery delivery service.

  • Fixing those inevitable mistakes

Anne Rose Business Management, Services & Risk Management

The issue isn’t whether we make mistakes. We all make mistakes, some more frequently than others, and some mistakes more critical than others. The issue is: when you do fix them? Or is it safe to ignore the "little" mistakes? As a service provider, I hate making mistakes that will impact my clients’ expectations; even if those mistakes aren’t catastrophic, they nevertheless diminish my reputation and professionalism in my clients’ eyes.

  • Walmart joins worldwide effort to reduce its plastic consumption

Scott E. Rupp Waste Management & Environmental

The war on plastic continues. In April, the Oregon Senate approved a limited ban on plastic straws. Its passage would make the state the second after California to enact measures limiting single-use plastic straws. Several individual cities, including Seattle; New York City; and Portland, Oregon, have also implemented their own policies to curb plastic straw usage. Not to be outdone, retail giant Walmart announced a "bold" plastic waste reduction commitment by "leveraging its massive private brand program." In addition to reducing plastic packaging, it is doing away with plastic bags.
