RVing with medical challenges
John Bos Recreation & LeisureRV travel does not need to stop when you have medical conditions. There are many high-quality medical services available to snowbirds and other travelers. In fact, they may have more experience treating those of us that are living in "God’s waiting room" in Florida, Texas, Arizona and other popular winter retreats.

Medical school education challenges
Rosemary Sparacio Medical & Allied HealthcareIt is no secret that the cost of medical school education has skyrocketed, and enrolling in a medical school in the U.S. is difficult. Along with that, or perhaps as a reaction to that, students turn to schools out of the country and look for other ways to pay for this education. In August, the U.S. government proposed tying students' financial aid to its ratings of colleges using graduation rates, postgraduation employment and income, and affordability as parameters for the ratings. This has proven disastrous for medical schools in the past.

Inhale, exhale: Proper breathing techniques
Jeff WhiteThere's one thing we all do from the moment we are born to our last second on earth: breathe. We all know how important exercise to our overall health, but breathing properly is just as important. The air we breathe contains oxygen, and when that oxygen enters our lungs, it's transported to every cell in our bodies. The key here is to breathe long breaths, thus filling our lungs with this crucial nutrient. The problem is many of us don't do that.

Network engineers may truly be plumbers soon
Victor Blake CommunicationsI used to joke with my colleagues and staff that network engineers are plumbers. Nobody cares about plumbing in a house ... until it doesn't work. When the plumbing backs up then its everyone's business. Such is the fate of network engineers, whose work is essential to the Internet and telecom networks, but is also thought to be mundane to outsiders. Soon we will be one step closer to being real plumbers with liquid-core optical fiber.

Pharmacists ranked No. 2 in honesty/ethics, but ...
Jason Poquette PharmaceuticalMuch talk has been generated recently among the members of the pharmacist profession about the No. 2 ranking we achieved in honesty/ethics in the latest Gallup poll. On the other hand, there is a somewhat "untold" story to this Gallup poll data.

Developing strategy and critical thinking skills
Rod Brown Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityCritical thinking skills are crucial to advancing one's leadership capacity, yet we pay little attention to it in law enforcement. Many officers do not even understand what critical thinking skills are. Rather than the repetitive "leadership training" found at most executive and command conferences, a step up into the more applicable skills of thinking and acting should be emphasized.

Controlling the predator population
John McAdams Recreation & LeisureI've noticed the discussion of predators lately, especially wolves, is one of the most controversial subjects for people on both sides of the aisle. Regardless of what some people may think, predators — particularly mountain lions and wolves — serve an important role in nature.

The challenges of academics and recruiting: Part I
Ross Tucker Sports & FitnessIt's the hardest part of the recruiting process for college coaches, and there is no close second: the academics. It's a three-pronged struggle for every school, with the third part — getting a recruiting class that fits into the academic requirements of that particular institution or conference — proving to be especially difficult for those schools in academically elite conferences like the Ivy, Patriot, NESCAC and Centennial, among others. Let's start, however, with the first two struggles, which are the academic-based issues that every program has to deal with.

The View from Europe: Auto A/C resolution still facing bumpy road
Andrew Gaved Construction & Building MaterialsPolicymakers in Europe have had something of a headache in ensuring one of their prime pieces of climate legislation — the Mobile Air Conditioning Directive — is properly followed. Given that restricting refrigerant on the basis of its GWP will inevitably see similar legislation in the U.S., this Directive's tortuous passage could prove a cautionary tale — and we are still not yet at the end of the road.
