Jackie Cambridge Medical & Allied Healthcare

A recent study by Kiddi Caru asked U.K. parents about the amount of outdoor time their child gets, weather permitting. 31% said they get three hours or less weekly outdoor time, in spite of 100% of respondents agreeing that outdoor time is crucial to a child’s development. This is surprisingly little, considering the same percentage (31%) get two to three hours of screen time per day, with 11% getting over four hours daily.

  • Does sex still sell in today’s business world?

Linchi Kwok Travel, Hospitality & Event Management

Clique Hotels & Resorts is a Canadian luxury hotel chain with properties in Calgary and Canmore, Alberta. According to CityNews, a media firm in Canada, the hotel’s website featured some "suggestive" and "sexist" photos, bringing in some backlash from social media. To some extent, those featured photos match the hotel chain’s slogan: "Sleep with the Best!" In this case, sex does indeed gets people’s attention, but it is uncertain such attention will help the hotel chain bring in more sales.

  • Travel2020: Summer travel at airports may be heading for slowdowns, showdowns

Lark Gould Travel, Hospitality & Event Management

It may be the summer of love in some parts of the country, but it could also be the summer of slowdowns as well, especially for passengers flying on American Airlines or anyone trying to snake through U.S. airport security lines. American is in a standoff with its mechanics union, waging accusations of staging slowdowns in the midst of contract talks happening between the two entities. Meanwhile, as the Trump administration moves manpower to the southern border, U.S. flyers stand to see slowdowns at TSA checkpoints as they try to catch their flights.

  • Circus arts: Building more than a spectacular show

    Sheilamary Koch Sports & Fitness

Dramatic music and theatrical lighting set the mood as three silvery, besparkled, nymph-like creatures move their limbs, twist, twirl and drop in perfectly timed synchronicity suspended in the air above you. You could easily be at Cirque de Soleil in Las Vegas or Cancun. Yet when the performers glide off the trapeze and step before the audience to take a bow, you notice their proud, shining young faces — they’re children! Actually, you have just witnessed a number in the annual fundraising show for Circo de los Niños in the small Mexican village of San Pancho.

  • Do you have a ‘Real ID’ yet?

Dave G. Houser Recreation & Leisure

Enacted in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, a federal law called the Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005. It established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. It has taken the federal government 15 years now to implement the act fully — a gradual process that has been met by some confusion and foot-dragging as each of the 50 states has approached the process in its own way. However, all states need to be in compliance by Oct. 1, 2020. The act could present a dilemma for full-time RVers — and here’s why.

  • Enjoy these lesser-known national parks

    Cindy Belt Recreation & Leisure

We constantly hear about record attendance at our national parks. This is great, since it means more people are enjoying the outdoors. But it is difficult to really enjoy a park that is full of people with long lines for everything, including hiking trails. There were 81 parks with over 1,000,000 visits in 2017. Instead of these popular parks, I enjoy visiting the lesser-known national parks where I can still get some privacy and enjoy the peace and quiet. Here are some of my favorites with both historical significance and/or great hiking.

  • What hunters in California need to know about the state’s lead ammo…

    John McAdams Recreation & Leisure

If you plan on hunting in California at any point in the foreseeable future, you should be aware that a total ban on hunting ammunition containing lead is about to take effect within the state. Things have been trending that direction within the Golden State for many years now, and the state began a gradual phase-in of lead-free ammunition after Assembly Bill 711 (AB 711) was passed by the California State Legislature and subsequently signed into law by then-Gov. Jerry Brown in 2013. AB 711 requires a complete implementation of the lead ammo ban by July 1, 2019.

  • Cochise County: A beautiful little corner of Arizona

Steve and Diane Owens Recreation & Leisure

It's a beautiful morning in the San Pedro Valley as I sit on my patio and gaze out among the desert landscape. Patches of sunlight brighten the shaded areas of the cacti. Arizona is a beautiful and diverse state. Where we live in Cochise County, the desert is in full bloom of marvelous colors. Following the trail along the San Pedro River, we admire the tall, green cottonwoods and the cool, mossy riverbank where we stop from time to time among the flowering cacti and mesquite to take in a deep breath of clean-scented air.
