  • Buying a certified preowned Porsche pays off

Darrel J. Doré Transportation Technology & Automotive

In September I embarked on my third trip across the United States since I retired in 2007 — and most importantly, my first cross-country trip in my 2009 Porsche Boxster. The last time I drove cross-country in a Porsche was 41 years earlier in my shiny, new Irish Green 1971 Porsche 911T. Needless to say, my head was filled with nostalgia and excitement. My delight quickly ended when a broken cable left me stranded on the side of the road. Thankfully, I had a certified preowned Porsche.

  • Hunting in poor conditions

    John McAdams Recreation & Leisure

Most hunters are familiar with the ideal conditions for hunting big game (namely white-tailed deer) with respect to the rut, wind speed and direction, the phase of the moon, and ambient temperatures. That is all well and good if you live in close proximity to your hunting area or have a schedule flexible enough to hunt when things are as close to perfect as possible.

  • RVing with medical challenges

    John Bos Recreation & Leisure

RV travel does not need to stop when you have medical conditions. There are many high-quality medical services available to snowbirds and other travelers. In fact, they may have more experience treating those of us that are living in "God’s waiting room" in Florida, Texas, Arizona and other popular winter retreats.

  • Controlling the predator population

    John McAdams Recreation & Leisure

I've noticed the discussion of predators lately, especially wolves, is one of the most controversial subjects for people on both sides of the aisle. Regardless of what some people may think, predators — particularly mountain lions and wolves — serve an important role in nature.

  • The best Porsche that was never built

    Jason Gonzalez Recreation & Leisure

I was reveling in a 15-minute break from work (and life in general) and prodding through the online classifieds in search of my next something to long for. My standard exercise includes a general vintage, an approximate price tag and a manufacturer before clicking the search button on Google. Even if my real plan is only to kill a few minutes, I want to feel productive — and who knows, perhaps even yield an effective result. How much would I afford myself today? What distinguished breed of GT car would I fancy researching, inspecting and negotiating for?

  • How to fix your leaking RV toilet

    John Bos Recreation & Leisure

We have been RVing for many years — more years than my wife likes to admit or remember. Like many of you, we have had RV issues that were minor outpatient repairs and a few that required time in the emergency room. A few years ago we had a toilet that would not hold water, and we had to spend $200 of our snowbird winter fund to fix it. But I recently learned about a new method that will usually solve this problem.

  • Porsche B32: The Porsche camper van that almost happened

    Conner Golden Recreation & Leisure

Ah, the Volkswagen Vanagon. For me, the name "Vanagon" conjures up images of a strung-out family camper, struggling to reach the crest of the hill on some Colorado back road. Sure, it was not hill-climber, but it was a fun runabout for a family vehicle. You could get all the kids, cargo, luggage and the dog in the back, and still have room to spare. It offered something for everyone! Why, you could even buy one with a Porsche engine. Wait, what?

  • Santa Claus is alive and well at the North Pole — Alaska, that is

    Laura Weaver Recreation & Leisure

While driving our RV through Alaska on our way to Fairbanks from Tok, we found ourselves in North Pole. Yes, there really is a North Pole, Alaska. The town was originally named because the townspeople were trying to entice a toy manufacturer to settle there. Even though that didn't happen, the town of North Pole not only survived, but thrived — in part because of RV travelers.

  • Back to school: Training on Porsche’s newest racing 911

    Cole Scrogham Recreation & Leisure

It's not every day that Porsche announces a new racing car, specifically built for an all new racing series, so the new 991 GT America is already a special car by any standard. In order to help teams build some competency on the GT America, Porsche Motorsport attempted an exercise that has not been done since the 2000 season — inviting team members to an official training session, which immediately followed the Petit LeMans race in October. Any opportunity to visit the Porsche Training Center in Atlanta is one not to miss, so when Porsche Motorsport North America offered this opportunity, my name was on the list.

  • Exploring tidal shifts at Bay of Fundy

    Michael Charland Recreation & Leisure

My wife and I just concluded a seven-month trip of exploring the East Coast of the United States and the eastern provinces of Canada. One of our stops on this trip was the Bay of Fundy. Due to its northern location and other factors, the Bay of Fundy is known for some of the greatest tidal shifts. We had read about these shifts and the tidal bores, so we thought we would check them out.
