Flying body cameras: The next wave of police technology
Bambi Majumdar Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityAmazon was recently awarded a patent for a miniature unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that would be used for law enforcement and public safety. Designed for police officers, these body cameras may literally fly in future. Commonly known as a drone, the UAV can work as a mobile police dash cam or a body camera, and it can even be used to search for suspects and to trace a missing child.

Is it really a bad time to be a cop?
Keith Funderburk Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityI hear over and over how this is the worst time to be a police officer. This comes from the public as well as soon-to-be-retired officers. Officers being physically targeted — two officers were just ambushed and killed earlier today in Iowa — and are constantly the focus of negative media attention. At face value, it would seem to be a poor time to be in law enforcement.

Dyn attack proves the best medicine is prevention
Scott E. Rupp Healthcare AdministrationLike it or not, healthcare is more mainstream than many like to believe, and with that comes its own set of problems because of this visibility. This is especially true when those nefarious actors continue to target the sector like every other.

New firefighters need to know their department’s vehicles
Frank R. Myers Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityMy former department recently had many firefighters retire. Because of this, there was a need to train many new recruits in a short amount of time. Telecommunicators: Voices that save lives
Keith Funderburk Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityThe voice that saved a life, but was not recognized. The unseen hero who is the life line of all officers. Telecommunicators keep everyone safe by their quick thinking and communicating ability. I never realized the complexity of the telecommunicator profession until recently. A large dispatch center can resemble NASA's mission control center. The dispatchers are the forgotten heroes who deal with life-and-death situations daily and succumb to the same physical and mental issues of a line officer, but they do not get the benefit of closure.

Can modern home security stand against the Clown Panic? Maybe
Ryan Clark Law Enforcement, Defense & SecuritySo it's nearly Halloween and you're trying to survive the 2016 Clown Panic? To some, the sudden appearance of random clowns nationwide could be considered a sign of joy or mirth, but you and I know better. Now's the time for the sane-minded to board themselves in their homes and wait this whole clown thing out behind cameras, strong doors, locks and a palate of seltzer water.

The danger of retention and contact shooting
Mike Ox Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityOne of the "sexiest" topics in shooting in the last few years is retention shooting. There are a few different definitions for retention shooting, but basically it's holding your gun close to your body while engaging an attacker within arm's reach in a way that he can't take your gun.

Are police body cameras more trouble than they’re worth?
Bambi Majumdar Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityThe nation was rocked by another scandal involving the police in July. Several cameras showed an African-American man being fatally shot by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Each camera angle gave graphic details of the fateful incident — yet none of those angles were from the body cameras of the officers involved.

Take advantage of fire department certification opportunities
Frank R. Myers Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityMany fire departments offer some type of education and/or certification policy or reimbursement program. Taking advantage of them can enhance your future and increase valuable knowledge. The "paper" is also something you can take with you, especially if future plans change.
