Wednesday, March 08, 2017I am currently the training coordinator for my department and have observed a push towards officer training that enhances verbal skills. This is a result of current trends and high-profile incidents that are being aired on every major network. Policing as a profession has always flowed with societal tendencies, so things are not too different from the past. I make every attempt to offer the most up-to-date training that encompasses current trends, but I make sure to not forget the tactical aspects of our jobs.

Is it really a bad time to be a cop?
Wednesday, November 02, 2016I hear over and over how this is the worst time to be a police officer. This comes from the public as well as soon-to-be-retired officers. Officers being physically targeted — two officers were just ambushed and killed earlier today in Iowa — and are constantly the focus of negative media attention. At face value, it would seem to be a poor time to be in law enforcement.

Telecommunicators: Voices that save lives
Wednesday, October 26, 2016The voice that saved a life, but was not recognized. The unseen hero who is the life line of all officers. Telecommunicators keep everyone safe by their quick thinking and communicating ability. I never realized the complexity of the telecommunicator profession until recently. A large dispatch center can resemble NASA's mission control center. The dispatchers are the forgotten heroes who deal with life-and-death situations daily and succumb to the same physical and mental issues of a line officer, but they do not get the benefit of closure.

Awareness sometimes is not enough, and we as police officers must bring this awareness to the forefront and be more vigilant than ever before — due to the fact that we are the ones being targeted.
