  • Fentanyl deaths rise as narcotics shortage continues

Joan Spitrey Medical & Allied Healthcare

As healthcare facilities continue to experience shortages with injectable narcotics, researchers report that synthetic opioid deaths have now outpaced prescription drug overdoses. It seems counter-intuitive — how can facilities be short, but deaths in the community continue to rise? As with much of the opioid crisis, the problem is complicated.

  • Beyond a ‘Shadow’ of a doubt

    Joshua Fry Recreation & Leisure

"The pistol the rest of the world’s police forces use" is the way I most often describe my CZ pistols to those in the U.S. unfamiliar with the CZ 75 platform. For various reasons, the CZ 75 is generally unknown to the average firearms user, and unfortunately, the majority of the U.S. market is missing out on a truly outstanding brand. I fell into that category myself until my exposure to the competition shooting world introduced me to this new and outstanding series of pistols.

Here are some top tips on how to recover quickly from a marathon, or any other endurance event.

  • Understanding the association org structure

    Robert C. Harris Association Management

"I’m new on the board. At every meeting I hear about more parts to our organization. Shouldn’t I understand the purpose and relations of each?" It was an honest question from a volunteer. "What are all these entities and why do we have them?" Many organizations have a structure beyond their single-entity association. For this new director, she was hearing about a political action committee, for-profit subsidiary and a charitable foundation.

  • The high price of public subsidies

    Seth Sandronsky Civil & Government

Does public assistance to businesses level the marketplace? Just ask Greg LeRoy, head of Good Jobs First (GJF), an advocacy group based in Washington, D.C. Public "subsidies favor big businesses and shortchange small, local and entrepreneurial firms — including a third of the Forbes 400," according to him. That policy dynamic has other effects. Governing magazine, tracking GJF data that examined cities’ tax-cut disclosures under a new accounting rule that studies federal measures of income distribution in municipalities, found that "local governments most heavily reliant on tax incentives tend to be those with greater levels of economic inequality."

  • The importance of gestures in ESL teaching

    Douglas Magrath Education

ESL teachers need to see the importance of gestures in the overall communication process, as gestures and speech coexist in time, meaning and function to such a degree that they can be reasonably regarded as different sides of a single underlying mental process. Instructors should be aware of common gestures and be able to incorporate them into teaching, particularly at the basic levels. Gestures and body language are also a part of culture. Sociolinguistic competence has been added to communicative competence as a key element in successful language learning.

  • House passes FAA reauthorization, general aviation responds

Ryan Clark Transportation Technology & Automotive

On April 27, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 by a vote of 393-20-13, funding the FAA for another five years. The welcomed bipartisan move was widely lauded and celebrated by a general aviation industry that had coalesced for progress. Additionally, the privatization of air traffic control (ATC) was abandoned in the final bill, another win for general aviation groups. "While not a perfect bill, it's most definitely a good day for general aviation with the House passage of it," noted Amy J. Bednarcik, executive vice president of I Fly America (IFA).

  • Stop undervaluing individual contributors

Catherine Iste Business Management, Services & Risk Management

Promotions are not always an option. Stable or small workforces may mean promotion opportunities are few and far between. Yet promotions are not the only way to inspire, appreciate and encourage our teams. It is time we stop focusing on promotions and start recognizing the value of our individual contributors. The first step to valuing individual contributors is to understand that their career path does not go up as much as it goes deeper into their field and then finding ways to facilitate that growth.

  • Research explores arm injuries in young pitchers

    Sheilamary Koch Sports & Fitness

Pitchers accounted for 58.59 percent, or $420 million, of the salary on the MLB disabled list in 2015, as reported in a Forbes article. Elbow injuries led at 21 percent and shoulder injuries followed at 17 percent. For young players, injury statistics can match or even surpass those of the major leagues. Consider a well-publicized report from 2015 showing that players between 15 and 19 years of age accounted for close to 57 percent of the total number of ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction procedures (UCLR) or Tommy John surgeries covered by private-payer insurance between 2007 and 2011. The ramifications for young players may not include such a shocking price tag but are equally serious.
