Is the US a nation of nontraditional workers? Not yet
Seth Sandronsky Business Management, Services & Risk ManagementDo not believe the hype of a boom in gig jobs. Such nontraditional work arrangements reveal a pattern that has remained largely unchanged over the past 12 years, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics survey. The survey, called Contingent and Alternative Employment Arrangements, found that 5.9 million Americans or "3.8 percent of workers...held contingent jobs" in May 2017 vs. 1.8 percent to 4.1 percent of the workforce in February 2005. The BLS also surveyed other workers in alternative work arrangements.

The road to ruin: How US infrastructure is hurting logistics
Delany Martinez Distribution & WarehousingFrom crumbling, aging bridges that failed to pass any but the most basic of structural tests to endless waves of patch-fixing on the torn-up highways traversing them, many of the 4 million miles of roadways in the United States have seen much better days. For everyday drivers, this amounts to an inconvenience, and perhaps a pinch of worry when ugly weather is tossed into the mix. For logistics professionals, however, the situation is much more dire.

Hints and ideas for boondocking
Cindy Belt Recreation & LeisureThere are many terms for kinds of camping, and each has a slightly different definition. Dispersed camping is more of a government term for dry camping spread out on national lands. Some locations are free and some have a minimal fee. Boondocking can be free camping or dispersed camping. Stamp collecting with my Porsche maintenance book
Jeff Coe Transportation Technology & AutomotiveMany of us like to collect stamps. When I was very young my mother told me about S&H Green Stamps. You would receive these at stores as a reward for purchases, and as you collected them, you could trade them in for prizes. Years later, I’m still excited to see or collect stamps, especially when it comes to my Porsche vehicle maintenance book. This is a great source of documentation, especially for the collector Porsche, and I feel entrusted in keeping up the maintenance book for my cars.

Nashville’s vision advances as new flight arrives
Matt Falcus Transportation Technology & AutomotiveMay 4 saw a significant moment in the history of Nashville International Airport (BNA) when a new nonstop, long-haul flight from London arrived. However, the arrival meant a rushed effort to provide a gate capable of accommodating the Dreamliner aircraft in the weeks leading up to the event. It is just the latest step in the vision to transform the airport by 2023. The new five-times-weekly nonstop flight to London is the first time in 25 years that the two cities have been linked, and the first long-haul service at BNA for just as long, following the demise of the former American Airlines hub at the airport.

House passes FAA reauthorization, general aviation responds
Ryan Clark Transportation Technology & AutomotiveOn April 27, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 by a vote of 393-20-13, funding the FAA for another five years. The welcomed bipartisan move was widely lauded and celebrated by a general aviation industry that had coalesced for progress. Additionally, the privatization of air traffic control (ATC) was abandoned in the final bill, another win for general aviation groups. "While not a perfect bill, it's most definitely a good day for general aviation with the House passage of it," noted Amy J. Bednarcik, executive vice president of I Fly America (IFA).

Changing your tune: Upgrading the 718 exhaust
David Newton Transportation Technology & AutomotiveEarlier this year, I reported my impressions of the first six months with my new 718 Cayman — mostly complimentary as I struggle finding fault with any of the three Porsches I’ve owned. But if I’m entirely honest, I’ve spent the last several months making excuses for what I feel is a lack of proper tonality for a car of this caliber. To a Porsche enthusiast, sound plays an important role in the overall experience of any vehicle, but especially in one that evokes such a raw emotion from the driver.
