On Aug. 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation to create the NPS. Today, there are more than 400 national parks in the U.S., and each tells an important part of the American story.

Before leaving on this trip, I recall my grandson was telling me it wasn't fair that he had to go to school while I was traveling around the country. I told him, "It's your job to go to school and get a good education, and it's my job to travel and have fun. Somebody has to do it!" It didn't seem to go over well.
