  • The joy of getting lost

    Cindy Belt Recreation & Leisure

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to get lost. I bring a trail map with me when hiking. I always have my phone in my back pocket ready to take pictures but also to use the map function if I need to find my way. However, I have gotten lost several times from my initial planned trek. I must have made a wrong turn or the trails weren't well-maintained. I have found that getting a bit lost can be good.

  • Top exercises for glute activation

    Heidi Dawson Sports & Fitness

As a physical therapist, I see and treat people whose glutes are not working as they should on a daily basis. In many cases they don't fire (contract) when they should to produce the movement they are designed to produce. The role of the glutes is to extend and abduct the hip joint. That is to say, they move the leg backwards and out to the side. They also assist in rotating the hip, some medially and some laterally, depending on their location and attachment points. They are such a vital muscle group for good form and function.

Bambi Majumdar Travel, Hospitality & Event Management

A report from last year stated that close to 70 percent of people now use voice search to help research and plan their trips. That number will only rise, and we can expect the trend to grow in 2019 and beyond. For hotels and related businesses, this presents an immense opportunity as voice can open up a whole new era of marketing. Savvy brands have already started investing in voice technology, and we can expect to see innovative customer experiences coming our way soon.

  • The proper way to dry practice

Eric Lamberson Law Enforcement, Defense & Security

Dry practice is an excellent way to maintain your firearm manipulation skills — particularly when you cannot get to the range. However, many unintended discharges occur in dry practice due to improper safeguards. Step one in preparing for dry practice is to follow the safety rules. These rules apply every time you handle a firearm. To start your dry practice: Unload your pistol in a different room than the one where you plan to dry practice. I always use the mnemonic MRI.

Geocaching is the perfect activity when RVing. Geocaching is a modern version of a treasure hunt using either a GPS unit or your smartphone. There are classes teaching geocaching at many state parks, but this article features basic steps with some hints.

  • Coming full circle: The 2019 Healy Arms Arizona State IDPA Championship

Joshua Fry Law Enforcement, Defense & Security

I began competition shooting as an extension of my law enforcement career after the horrific Aurora, Colorado, theater shooting. When I first read the news story, I asked myself if I could make a headshot on a body armor-wearing suspect in a panicked, crowded movie theater. I wasn’t happy with my answer when I was being completely honest with myself. I immediately sought out my local IDPA club after learning that IDPA emphasized defensive and scenario-based shooting that seemed to offer what I was looking for. My first match left me feeling painfully slow while watching the other experienced shooters, and showed me how much I had to learn. The 2019 Healy Arms Arizona State IDPA Championship gave me an opportunity to evaluate my skills all these years later and decide if the journey had improved my original answer to that life-and-death question.

  • The future of hotel designing

Michael J. Berens Interior Design, Furnishings & Fixtures

No one knows what trends will shape hotel design a decade from now. One thing seems certain, though. Hotel interiors will interact with guests in new ways and offer environments that will cater not only to their desire for rest and relaxation but also to their overall health and well-being. They will do this by combining the latest technological innovations and biological science with centuries-old traditions of providing excellent service and guest care.

Lark Gould Travel, Hospitality & Event Management

U.S. ski resorts are having a very good year. Snowpack in California's Sierra Nevada is now at 100 percent of where it should be and ski areas from the Pacific to the Atlantic are reporting a good season so far. So where should skiers go to catch dream-quality powder in 2019? It depends on their pocketbooks. A recent survey of average day rates at popular ski resorts around the country shows that Deer Valley in Park City, Utah, takes the summit for top prices.

  • 3 new guns that hit the target at 2019 SHOT Show

    John McAdams Recreation & Leisure

The brand-new .350 Legend cartridge from Winchester was far from the only cool new product released at the 2019 SHOT Show. Indeed, the list of merchandise unveiled is far too long to list here. However, below are three particularly interesting new guns introduced at the show that might be worth checking out this year. For example, while the Remington V3 is not a new shotgun, Remington made some tweaks to the basic design and released two new models for 2019: the V3 Turkey Pro and the V3 Waterfowl Pro.
