  • Despite PR campaigns, distracted driving continues to be a problem

Dave G. Houser Transportation Technology & Automotive

In case you haven't noticed, an intensive national campaign is being waged by the U.S. Department of Transportation, auto clubs and insurance companies to draw attention to the risks of using cellphones and texting while driving. But it turns out there's nothing really new about the issue of distracted driving.

  • Planning a spa getaway: Choosing the right place

    Judy Connors Recreation & Leisure

My first spa group trip was more than 10 years ago. Billed as a "girlfriend's getaway" weekend, we went to a high-end hotel that offered a luxurious spa services. Within a week of advertising, my group quickly grew to more than 20 anxious women, ready to get away in the dead of winter with their confidants for a weekend of massage, manis/pedis, conversation and cocktails over a gourmet dinner. The final day was dedicated to local outlet shopping. Success!

  • Don’t let your shooting skills get rusty

    Ken Jolly Recreation & Leisure

We all know people who buy a gun for home defense, load it and lock it away with the sure certainty that it will fire when needed most. These firearms should have been cleaned, broken in and tested with their choice of self-defense ammunition. Locked up, they collect dust and the lubrication dries up.

  • What exactly is trophy hunting?

    John McAdams Recreation & Leisure

Trophy hunting is a misunderstood topic these days, even among hunters. The many misconceptions and myths that surround trophy hunting have helped turn it into a controversial subject. Some of these misconceptions are probably the result of anti-hunters deliberately looking to misconstrue the true benefits of trophy hunting and use it to divide the hunting community in general.

  • Porsches and Polo in Florida

Irwin Greenstein Transportation Technology & Automotive

A jaw-dropping collection of Porsches gathered at the Sarasota Polo Club at Lakewood Ranch for a sun-kissed get-together called Porsches and Polo that was organized by Florida's Suncoast Region of the PCA. Held Feb. 22, the Porsches had assembled beneath the palm trees whose fronds whispered in the breeze from the partly cloudy sky as temperatures lingered in the low 80s.

  • How to make clay target shooting as easy as telling time

    Irwin Greenstein Recreation & Leisure

There's an insider's trick to shooting clay targets that can make the sport easier than you think. It involves your ability to tell time on a clock face (not a digital clock). Any clays-shooting instructor will tell you that the most important aspect of the sport is focusing on the target. Without 100 percent target focus, your eyes will likely jump back to the barrel of the gun and during that momentary lapse the target is racing away and you're playing catch-up — increasing your chances of a miss.

  • America’s 10 most scenic train rides

Dave G. Houser Travel, Hospitality & Event Management

America's rugged seacoasts, rolling plains, towering mountains and colorful desert canyons serve to paint a picturesque backdrop for a getaway on the rails. The real beauty of traveling by train, however, comes with the convenience of leaving the driving to someone else while you sit back and admire the passing scenery.

  • Why a CHL? We all have our reasons

    Ken Jolly Recreation & Leisure

Breaking the ice in my training classes, I learn more about my students by asking a simple question: "Why do you want a CHL?" Stories range from previous close encounters to the unusual. An instructor told me of one person who looked around to make sure no one was listening, then whispered, "killer clowns." I'm not partial to clowns myself. When you stop and think about it, anyone painting their faces like a clown can't be up to any good.

  • The Special Olympics from a Special Olympian’s point of view

    Laura Weaver Recreation & Leisure

Our RVing travels have allowed us to meet some pretty amazing people. Below is an example of one special person whom we have the pleasure of calling our friend. He was one of the first people to welcome us to our new RV Park. Here he came, slowly riding his three-wheel bicycle down our street, directly to our driveway. He confidently knocked on our motorhome door. His compassionate eyes bore into ours as we stepped outside to meet him.
