Why you need a pre-shot routine to break more clay targets
Irwin Greenstein Recreation & LeisureOn the surface, shooting clay targets involves stepping into the station, loading your shotgun, calling for the target and pulling the trigger. However, the success behind crushing clays largely depends on the mental preparation just before calling for the shot. Experienced shotgunners call this preparation the "pre-shot routine."

Using a shotgun for home defense
Ken Jolly Recreation & LeisureMy entry into the field of self-defense shotguns is recent and sad. My wife's brother was a friend and always crewed for me in regattas at the yacht club. We brought him to our home for hospice care so he could go pain-free with dignity and grace. This was not easy, and I cannot say enough praise about the people who work in hospice care.

Risky driving behavior in a vintage 911
Noelle Talmon Recreation & LeisureThere is a certain protocol when it comes to driving a vintage car. One of the rules is: "Thou shall not drive a dirty classic car." Yet, I found myself doing just that this spring after waking my 1976 Porsche 911S from its winter hibernation. It's risky to drive a dusty, pollen-covered vintage Porsche because it’s such an attention-getter. No one wants to be extolling the great virtues of one’s vehicle to a bystander if it clearly needs more love from its owner.

.577-450 Martini-Henry: The right arm of the British Empire
John McAdams Recreation & LeisureAdopted by the British Army in 1871, the .577-450 Martini-Henry was a modification of the .577 Snider Cartridge that was reduced down to .45 caliber. Specifically designed to be used in the new Martini-Henry rifle, the .577-450 Martini-Henry cartridge was used by soldiers and hunters in the British Empire for many decades. Though the cartridge is now obsolete and has since fallen out of use, the .577-450 can still be an effective hunting cartridge under certain circumstances.

The comfort and freedom of retiring to a motor home
Steve and Diane Owens Recreation & LeisureAmericans cram so much into their lives that they tend to schedule headaches. If you are not multitasking, something must be wrong. Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. I can tell you from experience, days will seem shorter and promises longer. Then, one morning you wake and all you have to show for your life is a litany of "I’m going to do that someday." Diane and I learned years ago life is too short; it’s not a race. In our motor home, we have learned to slow down.
