  • As Amazon raises minimum wage, not everything is good news for its workers

    Michelle R. Matisons Retail

As more pressure mounts to raise the federal minimum wage to a $15 living wage, Amazon announced on Oct. 2 that its lowest paid workers will make $15 per hour. However, Amazon’s much-scrutinized workplace practices leave people scratching their heads about its influence and long-term goals. On one hand, the embrace of the Fight for $15 goal is lauded. But the company remains embroiled in controversies like high-pressure work cultures for its white-collar employees and surveillance-style tracking of its warehouse workers.

  • Front sight focus or point shooting: Which is better?

Mike Ox Law Enforcement, Defense & Security

This is a can of worms that divides the shooting world almost as much as the 9 mm vs. .45 debate. No matter which side of the debate you’re on, you’ve probably got some valid points…and some that aren’t so valid. So, today, we’re going to dig into which of these is the best…for self-defense, for competition, and for fun. But first, let’s define terms. • The corn maze of strategic planning

    Robert C. Harris Association Management

Fall is the season for pumpkin patches and corn mazes. A corn maze is a strategically designed field that invites people to enter. The goal is to find the exit as efficiently as time allows. It is designed with obstacles and dead-ends so participants feel lost or confused. The maze comes to mind because an association board president said, "Our facilitator is going to lead us through the corn maze. When we exit, our strategic plan will be near completion."

  • We have good EU F-Gas regulations, now we need good regulating

    Andrew Gaved Civil & Government

At RAC’s recent Cooling Industry Awards, I ended my speech on a bit of a call to arms. The gist of it is that we as an industry deserve the respect of having our F-Gas regulations properly enforced. I am sure you don’t need me to remind you, as I seem to have been writing about it for months, that the EU’s F-Gas regulatory regime has proved quite a tough prospect for the industry, with its combination of HFC phasedown and bans intended to drive the market towards lower-GWP options at quite a pace.

Then, when we get comfortable enough asking questions as part of the routine, we begin to realize we can ask better questions in a better way. Tammy Hinojos Oral & Dental Healthcare

You’ve upgraded your technology over the years, yes? Surely you’re not still using a flip phone. Or a VCR to record your favorite shows. How about dial-up internet? So, it makes sense that industries would upgrade policies and procedures as technology makes strides in making everyone’s lives simpler and more streamlined. Dentistry included. Calling for the modernization "upgrade" of the dental licensure process, three dental associations have teamed up to become the founding members of a group called the Coalition for Modernizing Dental Licensure.

  • Ethology and veterinary practice: The (pseudo-)protective dog

    Dr. Myrna Milani Pet Care

Say the words "protective dog" to most companion animal veterinary practitioners, and most will know exactly what that means. Say "protective dog" to people outside the profession, and they will react the same way. The problem is that all these people may feel so sure of their definition that it never dawns on them that others may not share it. In reality, the mental images those two words elicit may vary a great deal. Moreover, this image has changed as a function of human and canine time and place.

  • Building community, fostering creativity: A collaborative workspace for…

Michael J. Berens Interior Design, Furnishings & Fixtures

Collaborative or co-working spaces provide a supportive environment where self-employed individuals can gather with other professionals and have access to the amenities of a commercial office setting. They have been a part of tech culture for some years now, but have not really caught on as yet with the A&D community. That may change with the launch of a new collaborative design studio for designers and architects, hosted by a Chicago design-build firm.
