Dental leaders focus on international volunteerism
Tammy Hinojos Oral & Dental HealthcareMedical professionals volunteering and serving in underserved areas around the world is a common (and positive!) reality today. Dentistry is well-represented in this arena. And for good reason. The mouth is a key indicator of a person’s overall health. It can show signs of physical, emotional and even mental health. In some countries, there are few opportunities for adults and children to have access to dental care and oral hygiene education.

Housing slips as market tightens
Michael J. Berens Construction & Building MaterialsA strengthening economy and steady employment figures were not enough to combat market pressures last month in the housing industry. Indicators for both home sales and home construction dropped, following positive gains in March. Despite high demand, low inventories, high prices and rising interest rates are making it difficult for many would-be buyers to find a desirable, affordable home.

An end-of-year checklist for your music classroom
Aileen Miracle EducationThe end of the school year is here! There is so much to do at the end of the year. At my school, we receive an end-of-year checklist from our principal, but as a music teacher, there are several other "must-do" items that aren't on the typical classroom checklist. Here are all of the things I think about and do as I wrap up the year in my music classroom.

Leading inclusive cultures that last: Zingerman’s co-founder Ari…
Simma Lieberman Business Management, Services & Risk ManagementIt's my belief that no matter how long people are at work, almost everyone wants to feel part of something greater than themselves. They want to know that their work makes a difference to the organization, no matter what they do. We all have that need and thrive when we are part of a community. Zingerman’s Community of Businesses is that kind of organization, and Ari Weinzweig and other members of Zingerman’s create that community of belonging every day for themselves and their customers.

The man with 3 faces: Hamon receives 2nd face transplant
Lynn Hetzler Medical & Allied HealthcareJerome Hamon became known as "the man with three faces" in April, when he was the first patient to undergo a second face transplant. Dr. Laurent Lantieri of the Georges Pompidou hospital in Paris performed both of Hamon's face transplants, with the first one taking place in 2010 when the patient was in his mid-30s. The intent of the procedure was to improve the quality of Hamon’s life. The patient suffers from neurofibromatosis type 1, a rare genetic condition that causes the growth of tumors along nerves in the skin and in other parts of the body.

Waterless and low-flow toilets save more water than money
Scott E. Rupp Facilities & GroundsWaterless urinals and low-flow toilets are an increasingly pervasive investment being made by facilities managers and building owners throughout the world, mostly because they help save water. However, there are arguments about the amount of money they save. The waterless units really do operate without water, but when making the case for their investment, the best argument might be a green one — as in the environment and not cash — as a corporate responsibility effort.

Food supply chain is bee-ing naïve about pollinator decline
Shawn Smajstrla Food & BeverageThe declining bee population isn’t news. Scientists have tracked a diminishing number of bees and other pollinators for years. Some fear extinction is on the table for these insects, and the impact could be far worse than losing a species. The deteriorating numbers of pollinators could have catastrophic results on food supplies, and thus the food supply chain. Just how important are these creatures?

Then and now: Apparatus changes over the years
Frank R. Myers Law Enforcement, Defense & SecurityAs many of us have experienced over many years in a career, there are always trends and changes. Besides those that have occurred to apparatus in the fire service, I have also noticed changes in design. The changes on apparatuses have revolved around safety, technology and improvements. As with all changes that occur over time, a trend usually appears across all departments.

1 great idea, 3 conferences improved
Molly Marsh Association ManagementAs association meeting professionals, we know that for real learning to occur at our conferences participants must be active contributors to the educational experience. It’s a core principle of adult learning theory, right? But when you leave "time" in the agenda for discussion, reflection or group work, so much can go wrong. How do you ensure there’s enough to discuss, but not too much? Sometimes creating a dynamic learning environment simply seems like leaving too much up to chance.

Stamp collecting with my Porsche maintenance book
Jeff Coe Transportation Technology & AutomotiveMany of us like to collect stamps. When I was very young my mother told me about S&H Green Stamps. You would receive these at stores as a reward for purchases, and as you collected them, you could trade them in for prizes. Years later, I’m still excited to see or collect stamps, especially when it comes to my Porsche vehicle maintenance book. This is a great source of documentation, especially for the collector Porsche, and I feel entrusted in keeping up the maintenance book for my cars.
