When we were looking to buy our motorhome, I always thought I wanted a built-in washer/dryer. It would be so convenient to have the ability to wash and dry our laundry whenever and wherever I wanted. Not having to save our quarters, not having to wait for an available unit during busy laundry days, and personal convenience were all arguments in favor of having our own.

As fate would have it, the motorhome we chose to buy had everything on my wish list — except for the washer/dryer. This actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

I meet some of the most interesting people in RV laundry facilities. As we wait for our laundry cycles to complete, we can converse and share RV experiences. I have learned where the best grocery bargains are, which local restaurants we should eat at, and what tourist attractions should not be missed. Because word of mouth works best, I have also found out about the most reliable RV mechanic.

I can also catch up on my reading. RV laundry facilities are often full of current magazines, daily newspapers and tourist brochures to peruse. Some even have a selection of paperback books with the "take one, leave one" rule, where you can take a book with you and leave one of yours that you no longer want to keep. I also enjoy the opportunity to be able to enjoy my own personal reading material, like my Nook.

I find myself corresponding with loved ones and friends while waiting on my laundry. I can use my cellphone to text or call. Many facilities have a free WiFi hotspot located there, so I can check my email or go on Facebook. I can also play games on my tablet, trying to conquer another level of Candy Crush.

I get some of the best park information in RV laundromats. Bulletin boards are full of daily park activities. Schedules of park special events, such as entertainers or dances, are also posted. Of particular interest are lists of "for sale" items, ranging from golf carts and sheds to bicycle parts and RV supplies.

Not having my own washer/dryer has definitely been a blessing in disguise. It has proven to be one of our most valuable resources when traveling through unfamiliar areas, as we learn about our surroundings. It has offered me the opportunity to participate in park events and meet new friends.
