Getting into a fitness routine may be near the top of a patient's to-do list, but there are so many other things they could be doing with their time — especially during the summer. But giving up an hour of their time a few days a week doesn't seem so bad, does it?

Most people start working out at the beginning of the year, then slow down once fall hits. But what if they were able to stay motivated to where they are working out all year long? Getting started is one thing, but staying motivated is a whole different ballgame.

Here are a few tips to get your patients started and keep them going.

1. Make sure they schedule their workout time

Whether they are meeting up with their trainer, going for a jog with a friend or simply just going to the gym, having it scheduled out will make sure they get it done. Life can get pretty busy, and sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day.

Have them start out with just a few days a week until they get used to adding it in their schedule.

2. Slow and steady wins the race

Many people feel like they have to start off being able to do 100 crunches, 50 squats and 30 pull-ups. Getting burned out will definitely make them want to quit, especially at the beginning.

To keep this from happening, have them start off slow. They need to find their pace and what works for them. One of the best ways to stay motivated is to make goals. Reaching a goal will not only make them want to keep going, but it will be rewarding to see how far they've come.

3. Comparison is not an option

Everyone is on their own fitness journey, and what works for someone else may not work for them, and that's OK. A good thing about being around others while working out is the ability to learn from them.

If your patient asks about an exercise they see someone else doing, maybe see if you'd be able to add it to their routine. Doing new exercises is a great way to see results and keep the routine fun.

4. Have fun

When we get bored doing something, we end up going and doing something else, right? Well, the same goes with a fitness routine. Doing the same workouts each time or doing a workout that isn't enjoyable is going to result in losing motivation and ultimately quitting.

Make sure your patients find something they enjoy doing. When meeting up with patients, ask them about their hobbies and likes/dislikes. This way you can help plan a routine for them that will not only keep them fit, but it'll be something they enjoy, too.

Most importantly, make sure your patients don't get discouraged. There will be days that they'll miss a session or a workout doesn't go well. Good thing is, there is always tomorrow's workout and another opportunity to improve.

Whether it's reaching a specific goal or just wanting to be healthier, having a fitness routine is all about being motivated and staying motivated.
