No matter what workforce you're a part of, most organizations are too large for you to know each and every one of your co-workers — especially if you don't interact with them on a daily basis. However, that's all changing in today's workforce.

Corporate America has created the working generation of fun, fun and fun. How you ask? Companies around are continuously taking their staff on group outings or happy hours to create a better team atmosphere. But are they successful in building their best team yet?

According to a RedBalloon/AltusQ report, organizations with higher employee engagement levels are more likely to see an increase in profit and productivity than those with lower engagement.

Whether it's rock-climbing, bowling or happy hours, results will vary. But it's been shown that company outings do actually help teams communicate better. They help employees gain a better knowledge of one another, building a better professional and personal network.

"Work outings are excellent for team building and overall office morale," GEICO Digital Sales Analyst Kris Ratliff said. "On one of our happy hours, I learned more about my team in one hour than I had the six months prior."

These outings allow your employees a chance to see what goes on in other departments of the workplace and feel more comfortable asking questions to others that they might not normally approach, especially with management.

"As a teacher, I don't get to see many of my other co-workers who teach different grade-levels, are in the administration or who may have a completely different schedule," fourth-grade teacher, Meg DeMaria said. "Our scheduled drinks/dinner nights help me stay in touch."

Not only does communication improve during this time, but the report from RedBalloon/AltusQ also found the following categories also saw a significant increase from employee engagement levels:

  • Productivity — 68.4 percent
  • Customer satisfaction — 64.1 percent
  • Attracting talent — 63.2 percent
  • Customer loyalty — 63.2 percent
  • Percentage profit — 60.7 percent
  • Staff retention — 50.5 percent
  • Sales and turnover — 50.4 percent

Team outings allow employees to forget about the daily grind of the office and focus on other things. They allow your brain to take a break and relax, ultimately being able to spark creativity. There's no doubt that working 9 to 5 every day can get a little rigorous. Adding a fun get-together can shift those mundane days right back around.

"They can be used as a release and a situation to express the stress of a day to people that are along your sides in the trenches," RGS Data Analyst Travis Short said.

Fast Company reported: "Surprisingly, strong social connections at work can even strengthen our immune systems and decrease levels of inflammation, in part because feeling socially connected decreases activity in genes coding for inflammation and thus helps us fend off inflammatory diseases like heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers."

No matter what profession you have, it's a necessity to change the way the standard workday is thought about. Incorporating flexible work options, like group outings, can go a long way in creating a happy and healthy work life thus creating a positive atmosphere for your office and employees.
