  • How a new school facility can improve learning

    Brian Stack Education

"The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It’s about what you are made of, not the circumstances." Years ago, as a high school math teacher, this quote was displayed in my classroom as a way to remind my students that, regardless of their circumstances and their environment, they could overcome adversity and succeed. In life, we make do with the hand that is dealt to us. Yet, for all the promise of a positive outlook when dealing with shortcomings in life, the reality is that sometimes an upgrade can go a long way towards changing one’s promise for a better future.

  • Opposing trends will hold remodeling growth in check

Michael J. Berens Construction & Building Materials

Recent first quarter industry reports show signs that the pace of remodeling services growth has begun to taper off. While forecasters do not expect demand to slip into negative territory for the foreseeable future, they do project that, contrary to the robust increases remodelers experienced in 2017 and 2018, growth over the next several years will be more modest. In part, this is because conflicting market forces will constrain demand. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), year-over-year growth in residential remodeling spending fell from a high of 19% in 2017 to almost half that, 10%, in 2018.

  • Business lessons learned from Frankie Valli

Roberta Matuson Business Management, Services & Risk Management

I did something recently that I wasn't sure I wanted to do. I attended a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons concert. When I first considered buying tickets, I thought to myself, "Do I want to be like one of the audience members that you see on PBS fundraising shows?" You know the kind I mean. Stuck in the ‘60s, singing every word to every song, with no worries regarding who might see them moving their hips to the beat of the song. I decided to throw caution to the wind. I bought tickets, and boy I'm glad I did. Here are some business lessons that I learned from Frankie Valli.

  • A rundown of the changes coming to Facebook

    Emma Fitzpatrick Marketing

This time last year, news of Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal had just broken. Weeks later, the company hosted its annual developer conference, F8, but data and privacy were hardly talked about. Instead, Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, highlighted what had worked. This year, though, Zuckerberg went all in and declared that the future is private in his opening keynote. Read on to learn more about how Facebook is addressing privacy — and the other significant product changes coming to the platform.

  • Take flight with the association altimeter

    Robert C. Harris Association Management

I spend a lot of time on airplanes traveling to association and chamber meetings. Soon after takeoff, the captain announces, "We have reached 32,000 feet, the ride should be smooth up here." At a high altitude there is less drag. The plane is more efficient, requiring less fuel. There is less turbulence. Routing can be more direct. Like the captain, when I’m addressing boards, I remind directors their efforts are more efficient at higher levels where they can soar. At lower levels, they will be distracted by squirrel chases and rabbit holes.

  • How social media is shaping modern-day police work

Bambi Majumdar Law Enforcement, Defense & Security

Social media can be an excellent tool to bridge gaps between law enforcement and the community. Kearney, Nebraska, police recently trained in social media to improve transparency, communication, and be more engaged and informed. More than anything, though, the department wishes to explore the possibilities of using social media to fight crime. We are immersed in a digital world, and using the power of social media to solve cases has become a priority for law enforcement agencies around the world.

  • Where to camp, eat and play in Sandusky Bay

    Connie Ulman Recreation & Leisure

Every year, we take a trip to Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie in Ohio. We started this tradition about 10 years ago to celebrate my daughter’s birthday and my anniversary. Through the years, we have really gotten to know the area: the best places to camp, eat and play. Our favorite campground when we visit the Sandusky Bay area is East Harbor State Park. East Harbor has so much to offer: fishing, swimming, hiking, mushroom hunting, butterfly and bird observation, a game room, a camp store, an amphitheater, a playground, and an ice cream shop.
