Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower (formerly Mid-Continent) National Airport is gearing up to open its first new terminal in 61 years, with a series of special events to introduce the new structure to the public and special guests before the first plane pulls up next month.

The airport's present terminal dates from the 1950s and has become increasingly ill-suited for the demands put on it by passenger figures slowly growing over recent years to a 2014 level of 1,533,669.

Construction of the new facility began in October 2012 to the west of the current building. It will incorporate state-of-the-art architectural design to both improve the passenger experience and build on the airport's aviation heritage.

The new terminal features 272,000 square feet of space with enlarged ticketing and baggage claim, a new roadway and curb side, 12 boarding gates, large concessions space and departure lounges, modern baggage-handling system, new car parking garages and rental car spaces, and a new parking apron for aircraft. For passengers used to the cramped original terminal, it is set to be a refreshing and much appreciated experience.

With the facilities close to completion, the airport is planning a week of events to celebrate. On April 9, the media has been invited to tour the new terminal, parking and rental car facilities, allowing access to areas that will be behind security protection in the near future.

Following this, a dedication gala will be held April 11, including food and beverages, entertainment and tours of the facility. Then, a community open house will be held April 18.

The date of the final event, marking the first flight and official ribbon-cutting event is yet to be announced, but is anticipated to be in early May following final outfitting of the terminal with concessions, signage and security areas.

Celebrations to open the new $200 million terminal have come in at $250,000. This demonstrates the prominence airport staff and the Airport Authority Board are putting on the terminal and its significance for the future success of the airport. Ticket sales to the gala will recoup at least some of the expense, however.

"This is the first time we've opened a new terminal in over 61 years, so it's a big deal for the community," Airport Director Victor White told The Wichita Eagle. "This is a state-of-the art facility and reflects the city's rich aviation history and high-tech future, so the grand opening is going to be something we want the community to be proud of."

Once in operation, Wichita's new terminal will take over from the existing terminal, which will be gradually demolished as the transition takes place. Primary carriers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines will each lease two gates at the new terminal, with Allegiant Air leasing a single gate.

Following its name change, Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport has recently completed changes in signage leading to the airport, and has also successfully rebranded with a new logo.
