The young, brash kid and his loud music have finally driven the old man out of town.
Because of an annual conflict with the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference, next season's University Interscholastic League state basketball tournaments will not be played in Austin for the first time since 1921. Both the girls and boys tourneys will move down Interstate 35 to San Antonio's Alamodome next March, pending finalization of the deal with the UIL and the venue.
Since its inception in 1987, SXSW has grown leaps and bounds, making hotel space and reasonable rates in Austin for both events on the same weekend difficult to find. The conference, which brought in $218 million last year, and the more heavily-attended boys state tournament usually fall on the same weekend.
"The basketball state tournaments have always been played in Austin, which makes moving out of Austin a very difficult decision," UIL Assistant Athletic Director Darryl Beasley said. "Ultimately, the UIL wants to provide the best state championship experience for students, coaches and fans, which is why the UIL is considering the best possible solution to the difficulties with availability and affordability of hotels."
Although the tradition of the two tournaments being played on the campus of the University of Texas is the biggest casualty of the move, UIL state tournaments moving from the Austin area has become a regular occurrence in recent years. The state team tennis, volleyball and wrestling tournaments have all moved to different locales, including College Station and Garland, in the last decade.
Beasley says there hasn't been a lot in the way of feedback from coaches, fans or administrators about the landmark decision. However, league officials explored all of their options before ultimately deciding to head to the River City. Dallas' American Airlines Center, Houston's Toyota Center and San Antonio's AT&T Center were also discussed, but all three venues had conflicts because of the NBA and NHL season schedules.
"Since an official decision has not yet been made, the UIL has not received an abundance of feedback from coaches," Beasley said. "However, UIL staff asked for the opinion and guidance of the Legislative Council as it related to the basketball state tournament venue. There was not a formal vote, but the council authorized the staff by consensus to move the basketball state tournament out of Austin for 2015 and enter into negations with San Antonio and the Alamodome."
The move to the Alamodome, the former home of the San Antonio Spurs, would also open up a significant amount of room for more spectators. Austin's Frank Erwin Center seats 16,540 for basketball, while the Alamodome seats 20,662 for hoops and can be expanded.
While it is a shame to see traditions fall by the wayside, the fact the tradition of playing the state basketball tournaments is still alive and well is the most important thing. And making sure the friends and family members of each player are afforded the opportunity to attend the state tournament is a close second.
