Pets make great companions and provide security. A pet of any kind — cat, dog, rabbit or even a pig will change your life.

Owning pets is like raising children we care for them and even give them names. In fact, while visiting Florida recently, I passed a lady pushing a stroller. When I stopped and looked inside, I saw puppy instead of a child.

When it comes to traveling across the country in an RV, there are some important aspects that pet owners must consider.

What pet makes for a good travel companion?

First, you will need to find a pet that does not get car sick. Taking care of a sick animal every time you relocate is no fun for you or the animal.

Do you have allergies? Pick a pet that won't cause you to break out in hives or sneeze every time you hug it. Just because you are allergic doesn't mean you can't be a pet owner. You may just need to pick out a different pet.

Think about your traveling lifestyle will you be away a lot? If so, a cat might be a better option than a dog. I have met many cat owners out on the road. Some have even created a special crate that attaches to their RV window so the cat can come in and out at its leisure. (Not recommended when in motion).

What is the purpose of your pet? Is it merely for comfort or for security? A dog comes in handy if you are a single RVer. If I come to your RV, and you have a fairly large dog that looks like he wants one of my legs for dinner, I won't be knocking on your door anytime soon.

Still worried about whether a pet is a good idea? Don't be. You will know what's right for you.

You bought a pet, now what?

Once you have researched, bought and brought your pet home, there are a few things to know.

Contact the parks you plan to visit and ask about their pet policy. Most times you will find that information in their brochure or on their website. Keep in mind, some parks do have a ban on certain breeds.

This tip is for the safety of you, your pet and fellow RVers: Always keep your pet on a leash. Yes, even your cat. It would be a shame to have your cat run up a tree at a park. Yes, this happens a lot. The cat will be rescued, but it may take a lot of help, a tall ladder and a few brave men.

Finally, always carry a bag to pick up after your pet. If you run out, many places have them available throughout the park. Just be courteous of your fellow RVers.

With that said, enjoy the time with your pet on your travels.
