The good Doctors Porsche — Ferdinand and Ferry — were automotive visionaries. They created and designed some of the greatest automobiles in history. And although their doctorates were only honorary, they clearly had something in common with a fellow Austrian visionary, Dr. Freud.
Each created a form of therapy. Freud's was psychoanalytic, the Porsches' was psychoautomotive. Feeling down? Hop in your Porsche. Feeling overwhelmed? Hop in your Porsche. Feeling anxious? Hop in your Porsche.
I am not asserting that driving a Porsche is the cure for everything that ails us. Modern society is a bit too complex and pressure-packed for that. But there is no feeling quite like sitting in a Porsche — right hand on the shifter, left hand on the key — knowing that, for the next hour or two, all you need to think about is hitting those apexes, even if they're only on the freeway on-ramp.
Those hours will be spent with a beautiful, soothing and hypnotic engine note singing in your ears, experiencing the almost-perfect melding of power, handling and braking that only a Porsche can deliver — at least anywhere near a price a mere mortal can afford.
Who among us has not experienced leaving all of our worldly cares behind while sitting behind the wheel of our car? Porches, as we know, are exceptionally involving and exceptionally enjoyable to drive, thus causing us to focus only on the task at hand and our effort to wring every last bit of enjoyment from it. For those few hours, at least, worries decrease and smiles increase.
Next, throw a scenic, winding mountain road into the mix, and the state of bliss may become truly pure and undiluted. Who needs therapy, yoga or meditation?
There are experiences in this life that take us out of the day-to-day grind and lift us to a completely different plane. For some it may be golfing on a beautiful day. For others, it could be climbing a mountain. For still others, it might be spending a day lost in the themed lands of the Disney or Universal parks.
While we may participate in and appreciate those other activities, those of us lucky enough to own Porsches love piloting our beautiful examples of precision design and engineering in an exceptionally spirited fashion.
So here's to improved mental health through psychoautomotive therapy. My therapist of choice is a Speed Yellow 2007 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Please excuse the relative shortness of this piece. The good doctor is ready for me.
