Trends come and go constantly, but some can make deep impressions while they last. One such trend that is slowly making rounds in the U.S. is buttered coffee.

I first heard of buttered tea and coffee as a child, and typically my first reaction was yuck. It is a favored Tibetan delicacy that is apparently quite healthy and is supposed to keep one warm as well — a definite advantage if you live in Tibet.

I came across the real deal much later in life and was actually surprised with the taste. It was soft, quite pleasant and, for lack of a better word, savory. Now if you don't want anyone to mess with your tea or coffee which describes me most of the time you probably wouldn't like to buy this one off the shelf. But it is definitely worth a try once.

Most Americans are quite enjoying their coffee now, so why change? Well, my point is if you can have raspberry-flavored coffee, why not a dollop of butter in it?

Buttered coffee is trending all across America, thanks to the Bulletproof Coffee brand. Entrepreneur Dave Asprey claims he got the idea during a hiking trip in Tibet when he had tea containing yak butter. Back in America, he experimented with coffee instead a wise move since coffee more or less dominates the Western Hemisphere.

Happy with the results, he started his company Bulletproof in 2010, offering a series of products that includes buttered coffee, coffee beans and even supplements. Bulletproof coffee is readily available in special shops on both coasts, and the way its popularity is rising, it seems that this trending breakfast drink may soon be seen in regular supermarket aisles as well.

One would think that butter with all its saturated fat and calories would be better avoided any time of the day. But experts say that blending black coffee with butter and coconut oil is a high-quality, high-octane combination that will have you raring to go within 15 minutes. Apparently, adding fat to the coffee not only stabilizes blood sugar but also helps people lose weight since the body remains active and super-charged, thus burning fat all day.

One important thing to remember is that the ingredients need to be natural or organic for best results, so butter that comes from grass-fed cows will work better. This healthy, wholesome beverage is being slated as the next breakfast of champions. It tastes like creamy latte and keeps one full for hours.

Some have even claimed it to be a life-changing experience. When consumed on a regular basis, buttered coffee keeps one leaner and fitter, offers optimum energy and even increases mental acuity. You can drink this all day, but the best results come from the morning brew.

If this sounds interesting enough, give it a shot because the drink is quite easy to make. All you need to do is blend hot coffee with 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter and a squirt of coconut oil. Run the concoction through a blender and you are ready to go. If you want to spice it up a bit, you can add some cinnamon powder or a few drops of vanilla as well. If you like it, then it's time for cream or sugar to move over.

Naturally, there are many detractors as well, and that's probably a good thing. Most Americans don't like anyone messing up their coffee, but an increasing number of health buffs, athletes and health food aficionados are slowly veering toward the buttered coffee.

Normal coffee gives us a buzz but that doesn't last long. The buttered coffee on the other hand prevents hunger and fatigue for almost two hours. Some say it can turn one into an Energizer bunny. Well, if it staves of food cravings and cuts down on the caffeine intake, it's definitely worth a try.
