If you want to upgrade or redesign your home, according to Houzz, odds are high that your renovation desire stems from one of the following five root causes:

1. Space optimization and better storage

The classic white kitchen by The Hammer & Nail, shown above, has been added to more than 239,000 ideabooks on Houzz, making it one of the most popular ever. Whether in the kitchen or elsewhere in the home, functional spaces that keep life organized are highly desired — and highly valued.

2. Improve the look, feel and/or flow

If you're going to live in a space, why would you not want to love where you live? Make it your own. That could translate into a large-scale renovation project. But it could also be as simple as adding a fresh coat of paint and hanging some artwork or photos.

Designer Penny Drue Baird She integrated a Sub-Zero refrigerator and Wolf range, microwave, oven and warming drawer with the white cabinetry to give the kitchen a polished look.

3. Upgrade appliances

New appliances do not necessarily mean a full remodel is required, unless, of course, your new appliances are a different size than the existing ones or are new to the room itself. I have yet to find a way to fit a 48-inch Wolf range into the standard 30-inch space of a slide-in range.

4. Improve energy efficiency

Most new appliances feature the Energy Star logo, but there are many more things in your home that contribute to overall efficiency or leakage: poor ventilation, air leakage via improperly-sealed windows and doors, duct leakage, inefficient heating and cooling systems, and the like.

If you are unsure of your home's performance, conduct an energy audit. You can hire a professional or do it on your own. The city of Vancouver offers the a free energy audit checklist, as do other municipalities, states and provinces.

5. Incorporate new technology

Technology can mean something different to everyone. Perhaps it means a home theater, wireless networks, automated blinds and/or in-home audio systems that can be controlled from your phone or tablet. It may be countertops with integrated charging stations embedded in their surfaces. Or it might be an elevator garage system.
