Running a marathon requires months of training, commitment and endurance building. That rings especially true for dedicated races such as the New York or Boston marathon.

But for runners who simply want to enjoy the racing experience without the undeniable pressure to compete, there are now a variety of races from which to choose. Races have grown into casual outings featuring adventures, themes and charitable supporters.

This guide is great for beginners who want to venture into running and create memories as they build up to their first marathon. From nighttime runs to eating contests, these races guarantee sweat and fun.

1. Walt Disney World Marathon

Orlando, Florida

Who really needs a reason to run through Walt Disney World? During this race, runners travel through all four parks, with Disney characters cheering you on along the way. The event also offers variety for beginning and experienced runners with half-marathons, 10K courses and adventure races. Enjoy snapping photos during the race and experience Disney like never before.

2. April Fool's Day Twinkie Run

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Life changed when the Twinkie factory was shutdown just a few short years ago. Out of devastation came this 5K event honoring the beloved snack. Runners are given unlimited Twinkies at the starting line, 1.5-mile mark and finish line. The Twinkies keep flowing at the post party for all participants. The run benefits Ann Arbor Active Against ALS, yet another reason to partake in this race that's more fun than fury.

3. Hot Chocolate Run

United States

Since 2008, this event has brought in participants from all over and grown to be one of the country's top runs. Racers choose between 5K or 15K, with one added bonus: chocolate. The race has been known to sell out with more than 200,000 runners. At the finish line, participants receive a chocolate-shaped medal, mugs of hot chocolate and endless chocolate fondue. This race benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

4. Krispy Kreme Challenge

Raleigh, North Carolina

There's nothing like a nice, hot donut. Those who accept the Krispy Kreme Challenge can walk away with more than they've ever imagined. This is both a race and eating contest combined. Participants begin at North Carolina State University travel 2.5 miles, eat one dozen donuts, then turn around and track 2.5 miles back. This race is full of quirks and a mere 2.280 calories. If you're up for the challenge, register and help benefit the North Carolina Children's Hospital.

5. The Superhero Scramble

United States

Test your superhero strength with this event. Dress up in your superhero costume and choose a course between the Charger (4 miles), the Intimidator (8 miles), the Villain (13 miles) and the Super Villain (26 miles). The race features obstacles of its own, such as slime and water. Proceeds will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and participants will walk away with their own personal victory.

6. Wicked Wine Run

United States

Can a glass of wine push racers to the finish line? That's what this event has been proving since it originated in Texas, now catering to all of the U.S. Runners have the option of a 5K with celebratory wine or a 1K featuring four tastings throughout. Participants travel through vineyards and enjoy a concert beyond the finish line. You can even wear a costume.

7. Rock 'n' Roll Series

United States

If music gets you pumped up, this race is perfect for you. Choose between a 5K, 10K, half-marathon, marathon or relay, all with stellar entertainment. During this event, runners will enjoy live performances from bands spread throughout the course. Musicians from all over the world will perform alternative, classic, punk rock, jazz and soul for everyone. This is one nonstop performance, with dance squads and cheer teams adding extra energy throughout the race. Pick your distance and rock your way to the finish line.

8. Color Run

Worldwide

This event began in 2012, and has since grown to a national level. Coined as the "Happiest 5K on the Planet," it takes place all over the country with its own unique twist. Runners dress in all white and travel through clouds of paint powder toward the finish line. The best part: Most racers are first-time 5K runners, which makes this the perfect place to try out.

9. The Zombie Run

United States

If you've ever felt you could do better than those actors in The Walking Dead, here's your chance. This 5K course is designed to look like a zombie movie set, giving participants the option of being runners or zombies. Zombies get the help of professional makeup artists and run after the living. Humans are given "life" flags and must cross the finish line with at least one of their three flags. The best part: You can finish the race whether you survive or not and for an extra $10, your can buy another flag with proceeds going toward the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

10. Warrior Dash

United States

This is a great race for a beginner who wants more than the standard course. Since 2009, this event has raised $7.5 million towards St. Jude Children's Hospital and countless title-winning warriors. The 3-to-4-mile course features 12 extreme obstacles including leaping through the flames of the Warrior Roast. Past the finish line, racers are celebrated with turkey legs, beer and live music during the post-party.

11. The Slime Run

United States

This is the perfect event for those who have dreamed of getting slimed or simply enjoyed Nickelodeon. Now as adults, the Slime Run offers a 5K course full of opportunity for just that. Obstacles are spread throughout the race where runners have to overcome slime-filled tunnels and pits. The slime is even edible!

12. Empire State Building Run-Up

New York, New York

This race offers a historical feat and physical achievement all wrapped into one. The quarter-mile journey is achievable for any beginner, with a great story to tell after overlooking a miniature Manhattan from the observation deck. This race up the Empire State Building and through 1,576 steps is worth the journey. Challenge yourself to beat the fastest-runner record of 10 minutes, or the 1-minute elevator journey.
