How (and why) businesses are ensuring employees become financially literate
Thursday, March 12, 2020A worrying trend has emerged in the past decade since the global financial crisis: Even with a world of information available at our fingertips, Americans' financial literacy is dismal and only getting worse. A recently concluded study by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation found that only about one-third of Americans surveyed were able to correctly answer a majority of questions when quizzed about interest rates, inflation, financial risk and mortgage rates, down from 42% in 2009.

Healthcare mergers and acquisitions: Navigating the landscape
Tuesday, February 11, 2020The past few years have seen a marked increase in hospital mergers and acquisitions (M&A), with deals closing at an average pace of about 100 annually, according to an estimate from the Los Angeles Times. In many cases, these mergers are a net positive for the communities they impact. Yet, healthcare observers and researchers argue that takeovers have the downside of eliminating competition and driving up prices, to say nothing of the risk to patient safety. Regardless of the debate surrounding M&A, activity is likely to continue at a brisk pace unless regulators step in or the healthcare landscape changes enough to force another shift. With that in mind, hospitals are advised to keep a few pointers in mind when it comes to a successful merger.

Pancakes and the value of reinvention
Thursday, January 23, 2020How do you like your pancakes? With or without butter? What kind of syrup? Beginning this spring, IHOP is betting that you'll take them to go. Late last year, the breakfast giant announced the upcoming launch of Flip'd, a new fast-casual option designed to attract the Starbucks crowd by offering the usual IHOP fare in more portable options. This latest venture is not unusual for IHOP, a franchise that notably stirred up a tempest on the internet in summer 2018. If you're looking for a way to reinvigorate your brand, you could do worse than to follow IHOP's example of rebranding. But where do you begin?

FAA seeks to take back the skies from rogue drones
Thursday, January 16, 2020For the past few years, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has had a growing problem with unidentified flying objects. Not the kind with little green men, but rather unmanned (and unregistered) aerial vehicles (UAVs) — "drones" for short. Originally designed for military applications, drones are now used widely for a variety of jobs, including aerial surveillance, bridge inspections, wedding photography and package delivery, among others. So how does the government keep track of more than a million remote-controlled flying machines? The answer, at least until recently, is "not very well."

Iran confrontation sparks fears of a new military draft
Wednesday, January 08, 2020As the United States and Iran square off on the world stage, news sites and social media alike are lit up over the possibility of further escalation between the two countries. Perhaps no site experienced as much of a traffic surge as the online home of the Selective Service System (SSS), the executive agency in charge of providing manpower to the U.S. military in the event of a new draft. In the days following the American missile strike that killed Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani, the Selective Service site actually crashed under the deluge of web traffic from young men curious — and maybe fearful — about the possibility of mandatory service.

A new, blue year
Tuesday, December 17, 2019It's official: 2020 will be the year of blue — and no, that's not a political forecast. For more than 20 years, the Pantone Color Institute (PCI) has been the trendsetter for the hues to watch for in the coming year. Its selection for 2020 is Classic Blue (PANTONE 19-4052), which PCI Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman described in a release as a "boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky." Pantone isn't the only one calling for a blue year.

A tale of 2 year-end reviews: YouTube vs. Spotify
Wednesday, December 11, 2019YouTube's 2018 year-end video, "Everyone Controls Rewind," has the dubious honor of being the website's most-disliked video. This year, YouTube played it safe with "For the Record," a video montage celebrating the biggest creator moments of the year. The reaction so far has been more positive than last year, but that isn't saying much. Meanwhile, Spotify recently unveiled its annual Spotify Wrapped, a personalized review of each user's individual listening habits. Chances are you've already seen Spotify Wrapped links posted all over your social media, and for good reason. What did Spotify do right that YouTube seems to be struggling with?

The future is when? The state of emerging technologies
Tuesday, July 23, 2019On July 16, Elon Musk — billionaire, physicist, founder of multiple envelope-pushing tech startups and the real-life answer to Marvel’s Tony Stark — unveiled his latest project: Neuralink, an implantable "neural interface" designed to merge human and machine minds. It's a technology that, until recently, existed only in the realm of science fiction. But as we prepare for the grand future we've seen in movies and books, a dose of perspective might be in order. After all, it wasn’t that long ago when people envisioned cars zipping across city skylines in the year 2000. With that in mind, here's a quick rundown of some other major technological advancements and how they’re coming along.
