Remembering Dan Gurney, Porsche’s only Grand Prix winner
Monday, February 05, 2018Dan Gurney died last month. I never met him. What I knew of him was from interviews, articles in various publications and images on TV. I subscribed to Autoweek when it was a weekly automotive newspaper. I remember reading about Ford’s great win with Gurney and A.J. Foyt at Le Mans in the GT40 in 1967. Even though I never met Dan Gurney, I felt I knew him.

The indomitable legacy of the Porsche 935
Monday, October 09, 2017Few racing cars conjure up an image and awake the emotion in me quite the same way as the Porsche 935. It debuted in 1975 and was the scourge of its competitors until the mid-1980's. Even in the Camel and Winston GTs alone, various 935 types won 65 races and four championship titles. The typical 935 was essentially a 930 turbo. According to regulations, the 935 had to use the road car's basic shape and floor plan.

Porsche 908: The little car that could
Friday, August 11, 2017How would you define a great race car? Winning races and championship titles is the most obvious place to start. But if those factors were solely the basis for my choice, the 908 probably wouldn't make the list.

Who knew the Porsche Speedster would be such a hit?
Friday, November 18, 2016Of all the different models Porsche built during the 1950s, the Speedster had to be the most charismatic — and today, it's the most desirable. It's a car with personality and pizzazz. But who in 1954 would have thought this $3,000 sports car with a 1,600 cc air-cooled motor that had no real heater and swing axles would someday sell for more than $100,000. And that's for a good driver! The really excellent ones sell in excess of $200,000.

Thou shalt not covet — even Porsches
Friday, September 02, 2016I love cars, motorcycles, airplanes, even tractors — anything with wheels and a motor. I don't know why. I did not grow up in a gearhead family or anything close to it. As a 12-year-old kid, I remember sitting in front of our 30-inch black-and-white TV watching automotive events on the Wide World of Sports and trying to draw what I saw.

Porsche’s complex Type 547 ‘cammer’ engine
Monday, June 27, 2016Can you imagine taking three weeks to build a 1500cc automobile engine and as much as 12-18 hours just to set the timing. That is the engine that Ernst Fuhrman — later to become the Porsche AG chairman — came up with when Porsche asked him to design a high-performance engine for the 550 race car.

Proof of concept: Porsche rules the road
Monday, April 04, 2016The East African Safari Rally has been known as the gold standard for toughness in major international rallies. It was first held in 1953 to celebrate the inauguration of Elizabeth II, and the last East African Rally was held in 2002.

The Porsche 959 and the Paris-Dakar Rally
Monday, January 25, 2016The 959 supercar was specifically built to race in the FIA Group B class. Porsche decided it wanted to use the racing regulations as a test bed for future models. Group B was a wide-open, high-profile class made up of loosely regulated classifications. During its brief existence, the group would spawn the Audi Quattro, Lancia D4, Peugeot 205 and Ford RS2000.

The Porsche 917 was truly a work of art
Friday, November 06, 2015I have been a "gear head" for as long as I can remember. Graduating from high school in 1968 meant I was lucky enough to grow up in the golden years of racing. My first exposure to Porsches was a Speedster in the back of a lot that I discovered walking home from junior high. It fascinated me. From that point on, Porsches would hold a special interest for me.
